The two of the most popular modern manufacturing techniques now a days is LASER CUTTING SERVICES & LASER ENGRAVING SERVICES
Laser engraving is an art and although this process is done with the help of computers, skilled technician is required for this process to produce the desired end product.
Let’s talks about some of the most common laser engraving mistakes, that’s help you from avoiding your project failure.
Mistake 1: Engraving Fabric but the Laser Burns through the Material
To avoid burning of fabric with Laser engraving process or cutting you have to understand which type of fabric can withstand the process at what temperature. Thick fabrics like denim, canvas & leather can withstand the higher power during engraving. But when you use delicate fabrics, it is important to start with high speed with low power.
When it comes to direct garment engraving, you have to lower the dots per inch at which you engrave. The higher the DPI the more material will be removed from garment. When using with lower DPI it help to ensure the laser to just slightly burns the top layer of fabrics & doesn’t burn the complete fabric.
Mistake 2: Acrylic Doesn’t Produce a Frosty White Engraving
More likely it is due to using the wrong type acrylic in the application. Two types of acrylic are used for laser engraving that is suitable for different application
Cast acrylic sheet made from liquid acrylic that can be shaped into different types of objects with different size. This acrylic is suitable for laser engraving because this acrylic gives a frosty white color when engraved, making it suitable for awards and plaques but the corns of it is, it will not give polished frame edges
Extruded acrylic is another type of acrylic used in laser engraving & it is converted into sheet by help of machine. It is less expensive then cast acrylic. This acrylic cut cleanly & smoothly and give fine flamed polished edges. It does not produce that frosted look that cast acrylic give but it gives a clear engraving, If you need a white frosted finish engraving then use Cast acrylic.
Mistake 3: Inconsistent Glass Engraving
When the laser strikes the glass to Engraving then the laser just only fracture the surface of the glass but engraved fully or remove the material of the glass which is to be engraved fully.
The surface can be rough depending on the type of glass used to be engraved. No one wants a rough surface on glass
If want to produce a smooth frosted finish just go through the tips listed below:
- Use a lower resolution that will give a better result on glass engraving when you separate the dot that you are engraving.
- Change the percent of graphics black to 80%
- Make sure to run your laser engraver with Jarvis Dithering, which will help to provide a smooth finish.
- Apply a thin wet paper sheet or wet towel to reduce the heat dissipation& improve engraving process & make sure no wrinkles should be there on paper.
- Finally, if there are shards of glass left after engraving, polish the area with a non-scratch scour pad.
Mistake 4: Wood Engraving Produces Different Results on the Same Setting
Different types of wood have different type of properties when they are laser engraved and they gives different result.
Lighter type of wood required light laser to give contrast & laser burns away the wood where as the heavy type wood required more laser power to give cut & engrave result
Some of the tips to engrave the wood are as follow:
- Maple type wood is the popular wood for engraving & give better rich result
- When engraving stained wood, excess smoke and debris can be wiped off the surface of the wood with a damp cloth after engraving.
Mistake 5: Laser Engraver Doesn’t Perform as Fast Anymore
Make sure to clean your machine regularly, much type of other equipment, a clean maintained machine always give better result than the not properly maintained machine. If the performance of the machine drops, then you need to check & clean the optics of your machine by the given maintenance requirement in laser machine user manual. This should be yours first step in correcting the problem
You have to inspect the optics “the lenses & the mirrors” weekly & clean them if needed. If cutting material of the Laser machine is not giving good result you need to check it & clean them as soon as possible. Machine optics are clear bright in color & are shiny, if you find them blurry or have some smudges on them you should have to clean them at that time
The mistakes which are listed above are the common mistakes among all designers that uses laser engraving machines, especially to those who have started using these machines newly. These mistakes are easily avoidable if designers have right knowledge to correct them
